CDR Steven R. Schofer, USNR (Retired) (September 2008)

​Commander Steven R. Schofer, U.S. Navy Reserves, (ret.,) husband of Elizabeth “Betsy” (Sprague) and father of Tommy, of Coronado, passed away Sept. 10, 2008 in San Diego following a recent illness.
 
Steve graduated from the University of Missouri at Columbia in 1979 where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity. His childhood was spent in Columbia, Mo. attending Hickman Senior High School where he swam at the state championship swim meet in 1975.
 
Following his graduation from the University of Missouri he was selected for Aviation Officer Candidate School and was commissioned ensign, U.S. Navy Reserves in 1980. Flight school in Pensacola, Fla. was followed by advanced instruction at Mather Air Force Base in California and at the then Naval Air Station, Miramar. He flew E-2Cs with VAW-113 based at Naval Air Station Miramar. He completed numerous cruises on board the USS Coral Sea and the USS Constellation. Following duty at Persuppdet, Point Loma and VAW-88, he was commanding officer of tactical training group pacific 119 and concluded his career with VAW-77. Among his military awards were the Navy Commendation Medal, Naval Achievement Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation with bronze distinguishing device, Navy Battle “E” Award, Navy Overseas Service Ribbon, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Navy Sharpshooter Ribbon and numerous citations and letters of appreciation.
 
His civilian career as computer systems analyst included work with AIT Corporation and Intelisis of San Diego.
 
His love of competitive swimming was passed to his beloved son Tommy who swims with the Coronado Aquatics Club and Coronado High School water polo and swim teams. He was a president of the Coronado Aquatics Club and worked on the committee that funded the building of the Coronado High School swimming pool. Steve's main loves after his family were Mizzou football, Coronado High School Water Polo and barbecue.
 
He is survived by his wife of 21 years, Elizabeth “Betsy” and son Thomas “Tommy” Schofer of Coronado; mother Marlene Schofer of Lee's Surnmitt, Mo.; father Richard Schofer of Fort Collins, Colo.; brother Paul Schofer of Jefferson City, Mo.; sister Susan Johnson of Austin, Texas; eight nephews and nieces; fraternity brothers; friends; and fellow Navy personnel too numerous to mention. Steve was preceded in death by a niece, Anna Schofer.
