L D Burke was a very senior NFO in my squadron, VAW-114.
He had more sea stories to tell than any man I ever knew. L D was blind as a bat and used a huge magnifying glass on his scope to perform his duties as the CICO. He had the respect of every man in the squadron for his knowledge and humorous personality. Once , I recall him spotting a submarine periscope at 50 miles. The other crew members said that was impossible yet when we scoured the area, sure enough there was a submarine with its periscope sticking out of the water. Yet another time in Fallon Nevada, LD had entered us in the bombing tournament with him tied to his seat throwing dud bombs out the rear escape hatch. He is a character we will never forget.
