I made a deployment in 1964 aboard the USS Ticonderoga with LCdr. Garcia. He was a great boss and looked after everyone in a very balanced and fair way. Long after serving with him at VAW-11 Detachment Bravo, he stepped up and corrected an entry in my Flight Log Book that was done in an unauthorized manner.
On the light side we dined together and he introduced to me his favorite cocktail called a "Brave Bull", that was equal measures of Tequila and Kahlua.
Another time when we first made a port call at Yokosuka, Japan and being the junior officer, I had to be the squadron duty officer that first day in port. Another more senior Commander of VF-51, Jim Stockdale asked me what I was doing staying in our ready room on the first day in port. I told Jim that I was the squadron duty officer. Jim told me to ring up Commander Garcia, and I handed the phone to Jim Stockdale for a very short conversation that went like, Jaime this Jim, my duty officer for VF-51 is going to be the duty officer for VAW-11 while Don and I go ashore and play a double tennis match at the Officers Club, and you are invited to come to be with us. The quick answer was "Yes Sir".
Another interesting flight took Jaime and I to Monterey NAS where upon when stopping the plane on the flight ramp, we were met with a surprise greeter by the Admiral in charge of the Naval Post Graduate School. Jaime turned to me and asked what is going on here, I just smugly responded, Oh that must be my uncle Charlie, he really got a big laugh out of that.
Just all around he was a great guy, and kept you smiling.

Thank you Don for sharing this story. I love to hear about my dad's past. He was a calm person to me and never went limp in a crisis situation. I hope you are doing well.

Thanks again,

Ray Garcia
