Captain Joseph James "JJ" George, Jr., USN , 60, of Hot Springs, VA passed away on December 21, 2011. Born in Brooklyn, New York, he was the son of the late Joseph J. George, Sr. and Louise Di Gregorio George.
JJ graduated from State University of New York Maritime College (engineering) and graduate school at the Armed Forces Staff College, and Old Dominion University. He completed Navy pilot training in 1975. As an E-2C pilot he deployed aboard USS John F. Kennedy, USS Forrestal, and USS Coral Sea. On 15 February 1991 aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt on station in the northern Arabian Gulf, Captain George took command of VAW-124 (Bear Aces). He served as the Comptroller, Naval Station Norfolk and as Naval Attaché, American Embassy Brasilia, Brazil and Executive Officer, Naval Air Station Oceana. Following his 29-year naval career, he became a mentor and teacher to many students in the Norfolk Public Schools and at Norfolk Collegiate School.
Survivors include his wife, CDR Susan George USN (ret.) of Hot Springs; daughter, Sofia Clark and husband Nate of Norfolk; son, Jesse George and wife Jessica of Chesapeake; granddaughter Isabella Leigh who was the light of his life; sister Janice Bacso and husband Ed; brother Thomas; along with countless other friends and family whom were blessed to know him.
JJ touched the lives of so many people and always maintained his trademark sense of humor. If there is a river in heaven, you will find JJ in his waders casting for trout.
The family will receive friends at the Norfolk Chapel of H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, 1501 Colonial Ave., Norfolk on Wednesday evening 28 December from 6:00 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, December 29, 2011, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 520 Graydon Ave., Norfolk by the Reverend Father Robert French. Burial with military honors will follow at Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery in Suffolk. Memorial donations may be made to the Sacred Heart Capital Campaign Fund. Online condolences may be sent to hdoliver.com.
